Lessons learned…

Thanks for all the well wishes for the healing of my left foot. Much appreciated. Doctor says the wound is healing nicely. Lying on my back with my foot elevated gives me lots of time to think. It is ironic that I am in this situation...I should have paid attention to my own speeches and workshops. I learned as a leader to only do those things that only you can do. Someone else could have cut down that tree. I tell my audiences to develop a list of tasks that then prioritize that list using the Eisenhower Box method (based on what is urgent and what is important). Cutting down that tree was neither urgent, nor important...but I did it anyway. I will definitely be more deliberate in the future as to how I spend my time. Lying on my back all day also gives me more time to pray

God’s Plan

This past Monday I was excited about my six week plan. I had trips scheduled, speeches to make, workshops to conduct.  It was going to be a very intense, but very enjoyable period.  That was my plan. I decided to get some exercise Monday AM by cutting down a dead tree on the ranch with my son-in-law David.  We had notched the tree to ensure it fell the direction we wanted it to, and I was making the final cut when the tree fell straight down...onto my left foot.  The bones were severely fractured and the ankle was dislocated.  Emergency surgery by a wonderful orthopedic surgeon (Dr Eric Grenier) and my foot was put back together. Now, for the next six weeks, I have to keep my foot elevated and not put any pressure on it.  This was God's plan.  No trips, no speeches, no workshops. Woody Allen says If

We are a Nation at risk.

We are a Nation at risk. We have external threats (Russia, North Korea, China, ISIS) and internal threats (domestic terrorism, divisive people, lack of respect for law enforcement personnel). The only way we as a Nation can get thru these difficult times is by concerned, caring, compassionate and adaptive leadership at all levels...from the Family all the way up to the Nation's capital. Let's commit to working hard in 2019 to be better and more adaptive leaders. Our Nation's future depends on it. I highlight 9 principles in my book Adapt or Die: Battle Tested Principles for Leaders that might be of use to you. Let me know how I can

Remembering 41

Over the past several years Sarah and I have had the privilege to be with President George H.W. Bush and his wife Barbara.  They were an amazing couple, truly inspirational.  Although we mourn the passing of our 41st President, let's take comfort knowing that they have reunited in heaven...for all eternity (1 Thessalonians 4:13).  Let's all commit to try and be more like them....humble, dedicated, caring  and compassionate human beings focused  on service to

Taking Care of the Kids

The children of our Nation are our Nation’s future.  Taking care of them is not only the right thing to do, but it is critical for the continued success of America.  I am not so sure that we are doing a good job taking care of our kids, as evidenced by many problematic trends (juvenile crime rates, school shootings, poor performance in school, etc) Here are some suggestions: Parents must communicate with their children.  When I was the Commanding General of III Corps and Fort Hood I mandated that all my Soldiers be home by 6:00pm.  The reason for that was so they could have a Family dinner.  I believed that the dinner table is where the Family unit forms and functions.  When I was growing up, it was the place where the kids reported on what they did at school that day, and the parents discussed how their day

Taking Care of the People

We should all be concerned about what is going on in our Nation these days.  Last night we had over 500,000 of our people sleeping on the street because they are homeless. We have had over 300 school shootings since 2013.  30% of American Families are single parent.  Our divorce rates have now exceeded 50%.  20 people per minute are subject to domestic violence.  There are 570 cases per day of sexual harassment across the US. I am absolutely convinced that the way we turn our Nation around is if we adopt a general theme that we are going to take care of our people.  That includes everyone, all the time.  As the Bible tells us in Galatians 6:2 “Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ”.  We should wake up, everyday, and focus on helping each other.  It will make all the difference. I believe it all

Happy Independence Day!

Happy Independence Day! Folks ask me all the time what do I think is the most important holiday for our Nation's Veterans.  Veteran's Day?  Memorial Day?  I argue it is Independence Day....because that is why our Nation's military exists...to preserve those freedoms provided by those who proceeded us.  There are Americans who believe that our Nation will always be free.  That is not necessarily so.  There is no guarantee that our Nation will always be free.  There are groups across the world who despise our freedoms and our way of life, and we must fight, daily, to preserve our Independence.  That's what today should be all about....a grateful Nation who enjoys our freedoms and pledges to do whatever is necessary to keep them for our children and their children.  Enjoy the day...but remind each other that this thing we have called Independence came at a significant cost....and that even today

Smell the Roses

Last week Sarah and I took a week off to spend time with the Family on the beach in Port Aransas.  Focused on the Family...not on the emails or the next task at hand.  We had a blast with the three grandkids seen here walking, hand in hand, to the beach.  God's true blessings. Please ensure you are taking the time to stop and smell the roses.  Enjoy the day like it was your last one on earth.....because it might

North Korea

I am cautiously optimistic about the upcoming meeting between President Trump and the North Korean leadership.  The very fact that they are meeting is a move in the right direction.  I was there in Fulda Germany on 9 Nov 1989 when the Warsaw Pact crumbled and the East Germans came into Germany to experience freedom for the first time. I know it can be done, and I believe that is the direction we are heading on the Korean peninsula.  Let's all remain optimistic and hope / pray for a good

Memorial Day

I cringe every time someone uses the phrase Happy Memorial Day.  There is nothing happy about it.  It is the day when we as Americans are supposed to pause and reflect on the service and sacrifice of the 1.2 million citizens who have given their lives in defense of our freedoms....153 of those under my command in Iraq. Freedom isn't free.  Someone has to pay the cost, and these folks did.  Let's ensure that we take the time today to tell our children, and their children about these great American heroes.  As Calvin Coolidge said The Nation that forgets it's defenders will soon itself be forgotten. Enjoy the time off.  Enjoy the days festivities with Family and Friends.  But remember....we wouldn't be able to have this fun day if someone had not sacrificed their lives to protect our
