Kindness

I am a fan of county and western music.  I find that sometimes the lyrics of the songs provide “lessons in life”.  Tim McGraw’s new song “Humble and Kind” really tells us how we should be living our lives.  Here are some of the lyrics:

Hold the door, say please, say thank you

Don’t steal, don’t cheat, and don’t lie

I know you got mountains to climb but

Always stay humble and kind

When the dreams you’re dreamin’ come to you

When the work you put in is realized

Let yourself feel the pride but

Always stay humble and kind

Every day of our lives we should strive to be humble and kind.  Imagine what a wonderful world it would be if everyone would do just that.  If you think about it, it really isn’t that hard.  It just involves making a conscious decision to live our lives that way.

It is imperative that we teach our children to be kind to each other.  Many times we remind folks of the “Golden Rule”:  Do onto others as you would have them do onto you.  None of us want folks to treat us with a lack of respect or to be rude to us.  Why would we do that to someone else?

I am concerned about that is going on in our Nation today in this regard.

Why do the Presidential candidates have to be so mean to each other.  That is setting a very poor example for our children and grand children.  Those candidates aspire to be the President of the United States, the leader of the free world.  They should be  the very role model of kindness.

Let’s take the time to review how we are doing as a community with the whole idea of “being kind”.  Are we demonstrating to our kids what being kind looks like, and the rewards that come from that?  Princess Diana said “Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectations of a reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.”

Are we intentionally, everyday, looking for opportunities to be kind?  Are we going out of our way to open doors, say please and thank you, and have a cheerful countenance when dealing with others?  We should.  And if we did, our community (and our Nation) would be so much better off.
